GajahTunggal clarifies

Your Aug 26 article Former, Dipasena Farmers in Lampung reap windfall is unbalanced and unfair.

Your report fails to point out that it is the minority of farmers who left Dipasena that can secure a better living.
The large majority and their families suffered a worst fate after the devastation that took place at the farms in Lampung where many were evicted and some even had their homes destroyed by instigators.

Your report also failed to point out that farmer may enjoy apparently higher income now precisely because they benefited from world leading technical training on intensive shrimp farming techniques by PT Dipasena Citra Darmaja (DCD) investing many years of R&D for this knowledge.

Furthermore, they reside on land where they may or may not have legitimate claims to, and do not have to pay for other capital depreciation or running costs on infrastructure, basic necessities and utilities. For instance, the electricity is generated from DCD's own power plant The cost for operating it, as well as other utilities continue to be borne by DCD.

The infrastructure such a, canals, wastewater management houses and ponds were built by DCD including borrowed funding a huge capital investment on the company's part. DCD also provides the schools, medical care, mosques, etc. for the community.

These facilities remain free to the shrimp farmers and families even though they do not work for DCD because the management undertakes this social responsibility to the community. This situation may not, however, be sustainable if law enforcement andlegal clarity remain impalpable, as there is a limit to social costs any company can bear.

In a climate where employment is crucial and responsible practice, be it by the corporation or the workers, needs to be cultivated, we sincerely encourage your reporter to explore the overall economies and social implications of the situation. We welcome your journalist to visit DCD to understand the background and circumstances.

The article also mentioned that Sjamsul Nursalim now in Singapore allegedly for medical treat is wanted by the Attorney General's Office on corruption charges.
This is incorrect. There has never been any corruption charges by the Attorney General’s office against Sjamsul Nursalim
